Welcome to FIELD JOURNAL, the place to get Style & Gear News, Outfits, & Inroads for the Adventure-Seeking Man.
Two of my hometown best friends visited me in Austin this week. We’ve known each other since we were 8. Grew up in the same school district. Played on the high school baseball team together. Got a lot of damn good stories under our belts.
As I get older, I realize how awesome it is to have close friends like this. We might only see each other a few times in a given year, but every time we hang, we pick right back up as if nothing ever changed.
It takes time to make good friends. I sure haven’t made it easy on myself by moving around in my 20s. (I’ve lived in 4 different cities.) So this trip was extra special to me.
Stay in contact with your close friends. Savor the good times together.

STYLE & GEAR NEWS
Mount to Coast R1 Running Shoe
I’ve mentioned to you guys before I don’t make any affiliate bucks on LIVE A LITTLE. However, I will sometimes accept seeded products to check it out. This is one of the few ways I can share with you guys new gear and give you authentic reviews.
Recently, a friend of mine in the industry reached out to me about Mount to Coast, a growing brand that specializes in versatile, long distance running shoes. He fielded me a pair of the Mount to Coast R1 to check out for fun.
After working out in the R1 for a week, I’m pleasantly surprised by the performance. The R1 is lighter than I expected (8.5 oz), with moderate cushioning and a responsive feel. The R1 is ideal for pavement, which matches how I run to maintain my cardio (I’m doing 3 miles tops around my neighborhood paths lately).
The biggest difference between the R1 and my current running shoe of choice, ASICS Gel-Nimbus, is the R1’s lower stack. I enjoyed the low stack so much that I started to try wearing the R1 as a trainer. I’d run a couple miles, then go to an outdoor gym, or my apartment gym, and do a bunch of bodyweight exercises.
The R1 probably won’t replace my Gel-Nimbus. Instead, I find the R1 an alternative running shoe that’s going to work my foot muscles more and keep me honest in making sure I don’t always reach for my high stack, highly cushioned shoe. I’m also using the R1 for simple hybrid training, especially for workouts that call for burpees or kettlebell lunges.
R1 comes with a cool storage bag and extra set of laces. Priced at $160.
Matador GlobeRider 35 Travel Backpack
Based on the GlobeRider 45 bag, Matador’s new 35-liter version boasts a tighter and leaner design. Both bags are carry-on friendly, but the GlobeRider 35 will be a more familiar size.
420D nylon shell with waterproof PU coating and abrasion resistance
Tons of pocket space around top, sides, and a back panel “smuggler’s pocket”
Clamshell opening that fits Matador packing cubes
If I were choosing between the two bags, I would go with the GlobeRider 35. It’s lighter, more versatile, and $60 cheaper than the GloberRider 45 ($350 price).
GlobeRider 35 is priced at $290. Available in 3 colors.
One of These Days Spring/Summer Arrivals
Matt McCormick’s brand, One of These Days, just dropped a bunch of new arrivals. I’ve always liked how he mixes the high-low of graphics and crewnecks with unique pieces like embroidered camp collar shirts and mohair cardigans. Links to some of my favorites below (not all are pictured).
Into the Distance Camp Shirt ($240)
Mustang Crewneck ($150)
Horse Knit Cardigan ($240)
Tomorrow Never Knows Tee ($70)
Mustang Tee ($60)
If you’re interested in the brand further, they make a lot of cool small goods and accessories too.

Vallon Ventures Shades ($116)
