FIELD JOURNAL 26: The Huckberry Explorer's Grant, Filson Scout Bags, Outerknown APEX Trunk
Plus, how to meet locals while solo traveling, the finest brutalist architecture in the world, and more...
Welcome to FIELD JOURNAL, the place to get Style & Gear News, Outfits, & Inroads for the Adventure-Seeking Man.
“We only get 30,000 days.” That’s how my company’s co-founder, Andy Forch, intro’d the Huckberry Explorer’s Grant you’ll learn about in today’s FIELD JOURNAL.
I loved Andy’s opening. Those types of numbers give me chills. It reminds me how little time we have on this Earth. I heard a saying last year that struck me similarly. It was, “What we do in a day makes a life.” Simple, sure, but easy to forget we all reap what we sow.
Walk daily. Eat healthy. Stay curious. Be courageous.
Take the creative leap. Talk to the girl. Take a trip that will forever change the way you see the world. LIVE A LITTLE

Filson Scout Bags
For the guy looking for a solid water-resistant bag, Filson’s new Scout Bags should be on your radar. They come in three styles, each made with 300-denier ripstop polyester with a water-resistant coating and a 600-denier polyester reinforced bottom.
Scout Tote Bag - $150
Scout 50L Duffel - $175
Scout Backpack - $175
There’s not a ton of other specs here with the collection, but that’s all fine. These bags have plenty of utility + cool rugged styling (all at reasonable prices). You can even get a few fun colors, like Slate Blue and Schrub Camo.

Outerknown APEX Evolution Trunk by Kelly
Outerknown just dropped the second iteration of its APEX Evolution Trunk, further refining one of the best performance surf trunks on the market. Why are they one of the best? Well, they’re designed exactly to Kelly Slater’s liking.
For starters, they’re still made almost entirely from recycled fishing nets (90% NetPlus® material, 10% elastane). The new short makes big improvements to comfort and mobility—Slater notes they have better length, better fit in the leg, and more secure lacing.

Even if you don’t surf, these shorts pose benefits. I have the original version of the APEX short in all black. They’re light as a feather and have a sleek silhouette. (I once took them on a trip to the Bahamas and got a handful of compliments during the trip.) The inseam is just over eight inches too—a length that hits just above the knees.
They aren’t cheap, but if you’re on the water a ton, and appreciate eco-friendly design, it’s a trunk worth the investment. Priced at $168.

How to Meet Locals While Solo Traveling
They say you don’t know a place until you live as the locals do. You can meet friends at the bar, but there are a few smarter (and easier) ideas in this story. Insightful read. [Atlas Obscura]
The Finest Brutalist Architecture in the World
I used to only associate brutalism with 1984, a book I can confirm has given me nightmares every time I’ve read it. (I’ve read 1984 twice in my life.) This guide turned my views on brutalism to a more appealing light. Lots of beautiful brutalist structures I had no idea ever existed. [Wallpaper]
How to Show Up, Even When You Don’t Want To
This post Jorge Luis Pando reiterates the power of showing up by breaking down Jerry Seinfeld’s “Never Miss Twice” rule. For all of us who are trying to LIVE A LITTLE more, understanding how to stay consistent in all aspects of life, is vital. [The Effective Week]

I like to collect old men’s lifestyle magazines. In FIELD JOURNAL 13, I talk about my vintage GQ mag from 1992 with JFK on the cover.
The Oris dive watch in this week’s issue reminds me of my GEAR CHECK interview with Joe Falcone. He showed me some of the sick mod watches he makes in his free time.
