I’d say it’s close up there for me. Can’t believe I went so long in my life without reading.

I was telling my grandfather about the book just the other day and his eyes lit up. He brought up several memories about his mom reading him Louis L’Amour stories as a kid. Cool moment.

My grandfather and father had a ton of LL novels which I read when I was younger. None are War and Peace, but they were so meticulously researched according to their time and location. Oddly my favorite is t even a western; The Walking Drum took place in I think 5th century AD in Europe and the Middle East. As for Education of a Wandering Man, the story of the guy who always let the campfire go out always stuck with me and stood as a reminder to carry some weight and help others.

Wild! I remember L’Amour talking about how dedicated he was to researching the setting before writing. Need to check out The Walking Drum. Totally agree with the lessons from the campfire haha

Education of a Wandering Man sounds like exactly the unexpected non-fiction gem that I would love. I think memoir is my most-beloved genre although, thinking back over the 50+ books I read this year, I'm realizing that few were memoirs this year. I shared my best books of the year recently too. Most of mine were neuroscience-related in some way. Check it out here if you're interested: https://notjustmyown.substack.com/p/a-trauma-informed-best-of-books-list?r=1ezccm
