This Week in Style & Gear: 11 Best Releases, Recs, & Reads
FIELD JOURNAL 34: Peak Design Outdoor Backpack, SUUNTO Run Watch, J.Crew x Atlantic Coastal Supplies, 3sixteen SS25 Active Collection, and more...
Welcome to the weekly FIELD JOURNAL, the place to get style & gear news, outfits, & inroads for the adventure-seeking man.
OVER THE WEEKEND, I published a Substack Note about slamming the laptop shut and cracking a cold one. I wrote that because I was preparing for a float trip on the San Marcos River all-day Saturday.
As a kid growing up in Missouri, float trips were popular, but it wasn’t an activity my family did. As an adult, I’ve been to a ton of swimming holes in Central Florida, but never a proper float. So this was technically my first legitimate, multi-hour float trip. The experience was awesome: the perfect amount of sun and shade, 72-degree spring water, and a fully packed cooler.
I’m starting to learn to love lake culture (and now river culture) here in Austin. Staying cool this way during summer is super underrated. Much better than soaking your body in a chemically altered pool.
Anyways, cheers to the first float trip of the summer. Many more to come. Maybe we’ll plan a meet-up and get a float trip on the books down here someday…
LIVE A LITTLE
Peak Design Outdoor Backpack ($190)
Last fall, Peak Design released its outdoor line that included the Outdoor Backpack (available in 25L and 45L) and The Outdoor Sling (2L and 7L capacity). Now, the Bay Area-based gearmaker just dropped an 18L Outdoor Backpack.
The compact backpack has a sleeker silhouette and zippered main compartment (as opposed to the other Outdoor Backpack’s sizes featuring a roll-top closure). The 18L model weighs 1.94 lbs and is outfitted with an abrasion-resistant, weatherproof Terra Shell™ 210D ripstop nylon that’s 100% recycled—and Bluesign approved and PFAS-free.
Other specs include: a hydration sleeve, a pass hydration hose, and internal laptop sleeve (fits up to 13” MacBook Pro), and the ability to add the PD camera cubes for gear organization. Priced at $189.95.
J.Crew x Atlantic Coastal Supplies Collaboration
Talk about a product collaboration with a beautiful campaign. Atlantic Coastal Supplies is a gear and apparel shop based in West Penwith, a coastal town in the southwestern tip of English in the country of Cornwall.
ACS’s founder, Shawn Lowry, actually grew up in Florida, which makes sense why this collection gives me nostalgia for my days spent in the surf town of New Smyrna Beach, FL.
The collaboration is a clean collection of timeless nautical clothing (my favorite). Another cool note, I like how J.Crew framed the shop navigation on their site into four looks: At the Beach, At Sea, At the Boathouse, and At Sunset. Pricing varies.
3sixteen Active Collection
Last year,
and his team at 3sixteen put together their first full activewear collection. The response was a hit, and now 3sixteen is releasing its SS25 Active Collection on Thursday, June 12th.You can view some of the collection on 3sixteen’s site under the “Coming Soon” tab. There you’ll see the popular Trail Short, as well as training tees and tanks. It also appears there are new short types coming, namely the Pace Short and the Training Short. (I believe last year there was a Running Short, but I’m guessing it’s been repackaged now as the Pace Short.)
I admire 3sixteen for being able to pull off activewear. They might be the only denim-first brand to actually try something like this, which is awesome. To me, it’s a lesson in showing that as long as you’re authentic (they’ve been hosting community runs and plugging into the fitness space on their own terms over the last several years), and are committed to your craft, then what you create is bound to be good. Pricing varies.
