VINTAGE IS THE GREAT equalizer of taste. Instead of paying an insane amount of money for the rarest clothes or shinest new gear, buying vintage allows you to world-build in an intentional and price-friendly way.

I thankfully learned the value of buying vintage when I was in high school. Growing up in a small country town in Missouri, my brother and I would drive out to local flea markets, Goodwills, and garage sales to see what kind of vintage we could find. We’d hone in on pro sports teams, outdoor gear, and single-stitched t-shirts with funny sayings. To this day, my best vintage tee find is a faded yellow shirt that says across the front, “Wet T-Shirts Belong in the Dryer.”

My brother and I would also look for style and gear that had a reputation to last—like vintage Patagonia, L.L. Bean, and Ralph Lauren. I still have a pair of vintage Ralph Lauren Country swim trunks from the 90s I borrowed from my brother and have never given back. During my college years, those trunks saw me drink a lot of rum buckets at a bar called Chase’s on the Beach in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

It might be personal to just me, but for some funny reason, it’s always my vintage clothes that end up invoking the strongest memories.

The Live a Little Vintage Edit

Buying vintage is a lot different than it was ten years ago. These days, prices are elevated and true hidden gems are harder to find. The counterpoint I’ll say is acquiring great vintage has never been easier.

Which brings me to The Vintage Edit. It’s a new series I’m rolling out once a month on the weekends for paid subscribers to build, explore, and curate their tastes.

Another reminder that vintage magazines also help build taste.

All of the gear below is sourced to be easy to purchase. But even if you don’t buy anything, the overall curation hopefully ignites curiosity and leads you to take a deep dive on a specific item or era of men’s style and gear.
